Pathologies
Theatopic dermatitis in dogs is a common chronic condition of allergic origin caused by environmental allergens such as mites,
tree pollens and grasses. The disease has a multifactorial origin, alterations in epidermal barrier function and immune system
dysfunction and/or genetic predisposition.

DAC or atopic dermatitis in dogs appears at an early age, but causes discomfort and itching associated with recurrent
dermatitis during outbreak periods and persists throughout the animal's life. 
The only way to be successful is a combination of different strategies to control various factors and avoid periods of outbreak.

Causes
1. Allergens: Contact with the most common responsible allergens are house dust mite glycoproteins and Aero allergens.

2. Altered skin barrier: Normally in DAC the barrier function is altered and greater transepidermal water loss occurs (TEWEL barriers).

3. Secondary skin infections: atopic skin is prone to developing recurrent superficial pyodermata and it is common
to see papules, pustules, collarettes, shedding and seborrhoea. Colonisation by pathogenic Staphylococcus species
is greater in atopic skin than in healthy skin, which can be partly explained by the lower activity of cutaneous
antimicrobial peptides of the innate immune system. 

About 40% of atopic dogs have recurrent skin infections due to yeast of the species Malassezia pachydermatis, which usually causes a strong odour on the skin, an oily appearance and the presence of crusts, shedding and paronychia (brown discolouration of the nails) and the occurrence of itching and itching.

Control Mechanisms

1. Allergens: Avoiding exposure can be quite complicated or impossible, but it helps to vacuum and wash bedding
washing at 60°C to reduce the exposure of the dog's skin to the allergens of these mites.
If you have a second pet that causes a reaction in the epithelium, avoid contact with each other.

2. Altered skin barrier: Topical humectants such as glycerol, glycerin, propylene glycol, panthenol and urea increase the water retention capacity of the epidermis, especially after bathing.

3.  Secondary skin infections: Regular application of topical treatments (shampoos, foams, sprays, wipes and gels) that are effective against bacteria and yeast.

4. Application of soothing and relaxing active ingredients.
